removing and replacing a fixed disk on an IBM AIX server (mirrored volume group)
Description
Procedure to remove a dead disk from a mirrored volume group on an IBM AIX server:
List the hdisks
# lspv
hdisk0 00522d5f22e3b29d rootvg
hdisk1 00522d5f90e66fd2 datavg
hdisk2 00522df586d454c3 datavg
List the logical volumes (LV) on the volume group (VG)
# lsvg -l datavg
datavg:
LV NAME TYPE LPs PPs PVs LV STATE MOUNT POINT
lv00log jfslog 1 2 2 open/syncd N/A
lv01 jfs 2 4 2 open/syncd /myapp
lv02 jfs 1 2 2 open/syncd /usr/local
Reduce the logical volume copies from both disks to hdisk1 only (the good disk)
# rmlvcopy lv00log 1 hdisk2 (replace hdisk2 with the dead hdisk)
# rmlvcopy lv01 1 hdisk2
# rmlvcopy lv02 1 hdisk2
Check that no logical volumes are left on hdisk2
# lspv -p hdisk2
hdisk2:
PP RANGE STATE REGION LV ID TYPE MOUNT POINT
1-101 free outer edge
102-201 free outer middle
202-301 free center
302-401 free inner middle
402-501 free inner edge
Remove the volume group from hdisk2
# reducevg -df datavg hdisk2
Check that everything has been removed from hdisk2
# lspv
hdisk0 00522d5f22e3b29d rootvg
hdisk1 00522d5f90e66fd2 datavg
hdisk2 00522df586d454c3 None
Delete hdisk2
# rmdev -l hdisk2 -d
Have the IBM tech replace the dead disk...
Configure the new disk drive
# cfgmgr
Check new hard drive is present
# lspv
Include the new hdisk in root volume group
# extendvg datavg hdisk? (where hdisk? is the new hard disk)
Re-create the mirror
# mirrorvg datavg hdisk? (where hdisk? is the new hard disk)
Syncronise the mirror
# syncvg -v datavg
Example
rmlvcopy lv00log 1 hdisk2
removing unused hdisk and vpath in IBM AIX
Description
Determine the vpath which are unused with the command:
# lspv | grep vpath | grep None
Determine the hdisk associations using the command:
# lsvpcfg
Determine the serial numbers of your disks you will be removing using the command:
# lscfg -pv | egrep 'IBM FC 2105E20|12494' | more
Note down these serial numbers as you may need them later
Remove the vpaths and then the hdisks using the commands:
# rmdev -dl vpath#
# rmdev -dl hdisk#
Note you MUST start with the vpaths for removal
Example
rmdev -dl vpath# | hdisk#
